A Day To Remember

Bring Me The Horizon

A Day To Remember, which is a post-hardcore semi-pop punk band, will be playing two shows in about two weeks in our area. With their new album that they just released What Seperates Me From You they are on tour this year and are accompanied by none other than Bring Me The Horizon, another band that reigns in the hardcore genre right now. This is a great tour to check out with ADTR's songs that everyone can sing and yell along with and BMTH's rougher side to get people's adrenaline pumping, this duo will have everything for the crowd. They will also have two other openers, We Came as Romans and Pierce the Veil, which are two other pretty popular bands in that genre currently.

April 7th - Valley View Casino Center in San Diego

Walt Disney Concert Hall

An extraordinary landmark in downtown Los Angeles, the Walt Disney Concert Hall is a common image in Hollywood movies and for millions of tourists visiting LA each year. Personally, I am very lucky to study in LA and to visit this historic landmark last year. Walt Disney Concert Hall stands out from the towering skyscrapers and historic buildings due to its distinctive architecture of undulating sheets of steel curving gracefully together. Frank Owen Gehry began designing the building with its distinctive modern style in 1987 and it was completed in 2003.

(Early sketches of the concert hall by Frank Gehry--I know...you have to be pretty smart to understand the squiggles)

The concert hall, the most expensive hall in Los Angeles, is ideal for a wide-range of musical performances from familiar Disney show tunes to classical music and is suitable for audiences from young kids to grandma and grandpa. The interior was designed with Douglas-fir and oak to reduce ambient noise and create an optimal acoustic environment—pleasing to the eyes and ears.

There are a number of great performances coming up in the next several weeks. World famous conductor Dudamel, completes a performance of Mozart and Beethoven with the LA Philharmonic on Sunday, March 20. On Tuesday, March 22 the St. Petersburg Philharmonic will grace the halls for a special guest performance of masterpieces from Rimsky-Korsakov, Shostakovich and Brahms. From March 24 to 27, Kurt Masur will conduct the LA Philharmonic with guest violinist Sarah Chang performing Brahms Violin Concerto and works from Mendelssohn and Dvorak.

Below is a video describing the architecture of the Walt Disney Concert Hall:

Also here is a video of a performance of the LA Phil at the hall:

Enjoy.

Have you ever experienced a romantic date outdoors listening to wonderful music with your lover, or just escaping from the typical noisy LA with your friends and family or even by yourself? No? Then you should head to a concert of the LA Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl this summer.

The Hollywood Bowl is a world-famous outdoor amphitheater with lots of different musical choices. Even when I was in Taiwan, I had heard about the Hollywood Bowl and I was excited to visit when I moved to LA. The Hollywood Bowl is the world’s largest outdoor amphitheater with music ranging from classical and jazz to opera and contemporary. Over the summer there are events almost daily, so there is no excuse not to go and enjoy yourself!

The LA Philharmonic, a world-famous orchestra based here in Los Angeles, plays at the Hollywood Bowl every summer from July to September. It plays classical music with a contemporary flare that is perfect for a relaxing night out under the stars. This summer one of the first concerts is on July 12th with Gustavo Dudamel conducting and world-famous pianist Lang Lang performing Prokofkiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. Beautiful and exciting, the music will touch your soul and inspire you from the delicate piano notes to the triumphant trumpets blaring.

Sound good? Here’s a clip to wet your appetite.

See you there this summer!

Lykke Li

Li Lykke Timotej Zachrisson aka Lykke Li, is a Swedish singer that took the world by storm in 2008 with the release of her debut album Youth Novels. Li's parents were also musicians way back when.  Li grew up living in various places around Europe and Asia, which perhaps adds to her very unique indie music style.

Just last week Lykke Li released her sophomore album Wounded Rhymes, which is darker and less "sweet" sounding than Youth Novels. The first single from Wounded Rhymes, "Get Some" is the epitome of her new sound, with lyrics like "I'm your prostitute, you gon' get some", you'll see what I mean:

Check out the remix done by Beck here:

You can see Lykee Li this Wednesday night at the El Rey Theatre in LA with Johnossi.  Tickets are $28 and the show starts at 8:00pm.  If you can't make it Wednesday then you'll still be able to catch Lykke Li on May 31st at the Wiltern!
